ABSTRACT

Rotterdam is located in the southern part of the province of Zuid-Holland, and it is the heart of the Rijnmond Region, including smaller municipalities and the port (Figure 8.1). Together with Amsterdam, Utrecht, the Hague and a few smaller cities, the Rotterdam metropolitan region (1.4 million inhabitants) belongs to the Randstad, one of the largest urban areas in Europe. This atypical ring-shaped urban region houses about two-fifths of the Dutch population (corresponding to six million people) and holds a dominant position in the economy, in particular in the tertiary sector.
