ABSTRACT

The earlier chapters in this work have demonstrated the complexity of the

printing trade in that, while remaining traditional and conservative both in

outlook and practice, it accommodated and adapted to change. Attention so

far has mainly focused on the experiences in the workplace; therefore it is

now appropriate to consider the trade in the wider context of local and

national politics and the emergence of a formalized system of industrial

relations. Where appropriate, this chapter focuses on Manchester, acknowl-

edging the importance of the city as a centre for commerce, industry and

printing trade unionism.
