ABSTRACT

It is now appropriate to bring together some of the more significant findings,

particularly in respect of the compositor’s position in the hierarchy of labour.

Study of the experiences of the compositor in the workplace and its institu-

tions reveals complex patterns of continuity and change contiguous to conflict

and co-operation. What emerges is a complicated and often contradictory

picture, amply illustrating the hazards of making simplistic generalizations

about any group of workers.
