ABSTRACT
The primary purpose of this chapter is to present the essential background
and context in which to consider the position of the skilled compositor in the
developing hierarchy of nineteenth-century industrial workers. The aim is to
provide a sound underpinning for the analysis to be made in Chapter Three
and at the same time to note any indicators which might elucidate issues
central to the debate.
