ABSTRACT

The bookseller Vincent Real (or Réau) died in Bordeaux in June 1571. An inventory of his possessions was drawn up at the end of that month, the document being dated 29 June 1571. This inventory has attracted surprisingly little attention - perhaps because of its very length, some 80 folios with text recto and verso. Vincent Real is rarely mentioned in studies of the book trade in the south-west of France. And yet the examination of his stock of books is full of interest and surprises. This examination is far from being complete; but, in a volume on the French religious book, there seems to be every justification for a progress report, however slight - for reasons which will shortly become clear.
