ABSTRACT
White believed that outdoor nature study would be useful, but he did not verify as a naturalist by appeal to usefulness. His natural knowledge was scientific in a sense the present-day biologist can recognize. It was valid in so far as it provided qualified predictions-in such and such circumstances, such and such further events can be confidently expected - and in so far as it survived the testing of these predictions in the field.
