ABSTRACT

The main aim of this chapter is to tes;t whether Katzenstein's arguments, on the economic interests of smaller sta.tes, apply to smaller states in the EU. Firstly, the chapter tests Katzenstein's claims that the economies of the smaller states are more open and dependent on the economies of other states than larger states. The chapter examines whether this is right in the EU context by looking at the export and import figures of member states. Secondly, the chapter tests Katzenstein's argument that the economic specializations of smaller states impacts upon their range of interests. This is analysed by looking at the range of interests of member states in our two policy areas: the CAP and the Regional Policy.
