ABSTRACT

Sept. yc 28th $ We saw by our Glasses again these strange columnar things, they seem to be Trees; some say that such Trees had been observed in N. Zeeland about the River Thames, others again pretend they are Bamboos. I cannot but allow, that they have all the appearance of Trees, being thinly covered with some greens from top to bottom, but the Stem seems to be much too thick, & out of proportion for such Trees, & though it blows very fresh &: we can observe the loose greens move to leeward, we however never see the Stems bent. These things look much like a Hopplantation, only the poles are too thick & at least as a main yard or Fore-top-Mast. In short, though I may be wrong in my first opinion, that they are Stone-pillars, I am not yet clear what strange kind of Tree they can be.1 In the night we made a long trip & put about at midnight; towards daylight we saw we had weathered the point of the Reef & we bore away along the weatherside of the Isle. Thermometer at 68°, in my Cabin 68|°.
