ABSTRACT

The 1950s saw the beginning of an ethnomusicological interest in examining the relationships between language and music that still continues. Some research on language-music concerns was stimulated by studies in descriptive linguistics and the desire to understand the structural similarities between linguistics and musicology (Nettl 1958; Bright 1963). Other works took a more general approach to the study of language and music, such as George List’s classification system identifying the boundaries of speech and melody (List 1963: 13-14).
