ABSTRACT
On 1 February 1571 the city of London ordered all the companies of London to place a copy of the latest edition of John Foxe’s Acts and Monuments, commonly known as The Book of Martyrs of the Anglican Church, in their halls, so that all might read it. This was the ‘nearly definitive’ edition of 1570 in two volumes and two thousand pages.1
