ABSTRACT

Peter of Verona lay dead in the forest of Barlassina, but Peter Martyr had not yet been born. The moment of death is the fundamental turning point for a saint of the Church, the place when life ends and cult begins. Peter of Verona lay dead in the forest of Barlassina, but Peter Martyr had not yet been born. The brethren themselves carried the body of Peter to Milan, while sending Brother Domenico to Meda to lie in agony for almost a week until he died, though not before he told his story. The news of Peter's murder spread quickly throughout Europe. Chroniclers from many different Countries inserted the date of Peter's death in their registers. The pope was satisfied with the results of the process and proceeded to canonize Peter at the earliest possible opportunity. Finally, they established material for both hagiography and sermons by collecting miracles attributed to Peter.
