ABSTRACT
There is evidence that the first Uyghur interest in establishing the Twelve Muqam as a national canon arose well before the establishment of the PRC in 1949. This was due largely to the influence of cultural models and nationalist ideology emanating from the USSR, and led by what might be termed diasporic Uyghur communities based within the Soviet Central Asian states.
