ABSTRACT

Both these scenarios are avoidable given what we now know about informal networks. It’s just that the way that we approach business change needs to change – a lot!

Looking back at the lessons learnt from the pioneers who used influencers and informal personal networks to make change happen in their organizations, the single biggest hurdle to overcome was undoubtedly the initial senior managers’ mindsets. Once this was overcome, the mechanics were relatively straightforward and the interest shown by those engaged in the process (particularly the influencers) generated an enthusiasm that was very similar to the ‘hot spots’ of intense work and enjoyment described by Lynda Gratton in her book ‘Hot Spots’ (see Views and Clues).
