ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins to scrutinize investment treaties in light of the right to development. It provides an interdisciplinary examination of the politics and economics of globalization and their impact on the right to development. The book focuses on the different versions of international cooperation, and examines human rights within the context of global governance based on international investment and globalization. It also focuses on the commitments of the international community to a rights-based process of development, and outlines contemporary international cooperation for development. The book looks at the micro-level of regulation, and also examines the important advances made by the corporate social responsibility movement. It draws upon the international legal obligations of states to international cooperation, and emphasizes political commitments to collective security that prioritizes cooperation for human development.
