ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to examine a variety of advances in both the theory and practice of classification with particular reference to the impact of new technology on the development and application of library classification. It will examine these in terms of:

• developments in 'traditional' published schedules • pragmatic attempts to apply classification to organize digital resources • developments in the theory of knowledge organization and the impact

of this on the direction of research dealing with establishing automatic control over classification and retrieval of large collections of digital documents.
