ABSTRACT

Today, the Dewey Decimal Classification is the world's most widely used library classification scheme. We arrive in the present century with the goal of having the Classification evolve to be the world's most widely used general knowledge organization tool. To realize this vision, efforts are under way on several fronts to improve the Classification for current and future uses. These efforts include: continuous updating to keep pace with knowledge; support of classifier productivity; development of meaningful notation; expanded international use; provision of flexible structures; and ongoing research. This chapter will discuss these efforts through the policies and projects that illustrate how the Dewey Decimal Classification is preparing to be the general knowledge organization tool for the twenty-first century.
