ABSTRACT

People are all pretty familiar with the idea of feedback. It is a concept that is well and truly established in management. However, there is no doubt that whilst most people have a broad understanding of feedback and appreciate that giving and receiving feedback is important, this does not mean they do it well. The problem with feedback is that it can be daunting. As a facilitator one will need to be able to challenge behaviour, notice individual and group dynamics, support and value colleagues. At the outset the facilitator and manager can concern themselves with the following types of feedback: positive feedback, constructive feedback, and challenging feedback. This chapter presents an exercise to introduce the subject of feedback and to help people assess what skills they already have. This activity can be useful for people who are training to be facilitators, as well as for managers and teams who want to develop clearer methods of communication.
