ABSTRACT

Facilitation requires us to be as authentic as possible and ties in with the principle that we can only facilitate others in those areas that we have explored and understood ourself. The chapter discusses some areas in which we might need some development are: self-awareness; be awake to others; be empathie; have good intent; be confident; be open-minded; be clear; be discerning; allow humour; and be intuitive. Self-awareness is the most important quality and needs constant attention. Facilitator intent is extremely helpful for facilitators to be aware of their own bodies as 'tuning forks'. There are a number of ways in which we can develop our qualities as a facilitator: Discover how much self-talk and judgement we have; Write down a list of values we adhere to in our personal and work life; and Discuss with our partner, coach or a trusted confidante how well we nurture ourself.
