ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the consultancy skills used in facilitation. As a facilitator, we have an expertise that is invaluable to organizations. We hold the big picture of the company and have a unique insight into the culture by working at various levels as a change agent. Potency involves how we use our power to serve people positively and benignly. Teams or groups will experience our potency when we use our insights to inform the group about individual and group behaviour, state what we notice about the group process, and use our potency to foster independence rather than letting the group push us into giving them all the answers. Permission is also about giving ourself encouragement to go further and dare to bring into the relationship with the group more of the interventions we might normally censor.
