ABSTRACT

The imaginai is a term used to incorporate a variety of techniques which are at the disposal of the facilitator and which help the team, group or individual to make sense of what is going on. Some of these techniques we will certainly know; for example people often use metaphors to help illustrate the situation they are facing, such as 'everything in the garden is rosy' or 'we are a well-oiled machine'. Storytelling is another imaginai technique which overlaps with metaphor. Others which fall into this area are rituals, anecdotes, associations, analogies, imagery and characterizations. The delight of using the imaginai, however, is that it is an invitation to the team or the individual to see things in a new light, to allow creativity a place in work and to be imaginative. This is true for facilitators themselves, as well as for the people with whom they are working.
