ABSTRACT

If one is a manager, trainer, facilitator or coach, he will sometimes has to engage others in ways that bridge old divisions or which unexpectedly illuminate new paths. Stories can do this, and if he has access to the right story at the right time, he has a powerful resource at hand. Myths too are metaphors. They may tell fantastic stories but they also carry profound truths that can resonate with the challenges we face today. Such stories provide us with maps of the inner psyche and as such are psychologically valid and emotionally realistic even when they seem to be fantastic, impossible or unreal. There are also two main approaches to storytelling which trainers need to consider. The first is to develop our own archive of stories that we think are appropriate for learning situations. The second approach is to draw from the participants themselves.
