ABSTRACT

For groups and teams, beginnings are an important aspect of what is known as the forming stage of development. When people come together they will hopefully know why they are there and will have some idea of what to expect. Whatever the team or group's explicit task, the people involved will be focusing at the beginning on interpersonal dynamics. Some people will set out to make an impression by talking about their experience, by asking questions or even by being late. The best thing is to address the reality of beginnings which will allow people to be present in mind and emotions as well as their body. By acknowledging beginnings we are signalling that a change is about to happen. The key issue here is to acknowledge that at the beginning people will be bringing their personal agendas and baggage into the group.
