ABSTRACT

Feelings are often considered problematic in the workplace. The unspoken message we pick up is that strong emotions are embarrassing and as a result we must not express them. However, for the facilitator, feelings are an extremely important barometer and it is essential if we are looking to work effectively with others that we are confident and competent with emotions. Although many of us are used to censoring our feelings we know that they are, nevertheless, going on all the time. Being able to manage this range of feelings starts with managing our own. Unfortunately feelings also come with a lot of baggage. In British culture, for example, most men carry messages about being brave, not crying and not showing vulnerability. Speechless helps people to explore and experience what it would be like to bring more of themselves into potentially charged situations.
