ABSTRACT

Brainstorming and idea generation is a process designed to produce a large number of ideas in a short period of time. This chapter presents some of the participative processes for a Workshop and is clearly not intended to replace the work of researchers, statisticians and other more formal risk assessors. This is sometimes called the Pareto Principle, 20 percent of the causes are responsible for 80 percent of the effect. And as a corollary, 80 percent of the problem comes from 20 percent of the causes. Ranking is carried out simply on the basis of participants' subjective judgement of each proposal. Where a more objective, criterion-based ranking is sought, use the Ratings Chart Tool instead. Muti-Voting Tool reduces the number of ideas generated in a group to a manageable size, but not arrive at a final choice. It can be used where too many items have been generated to be addressed at one time.
