ABSTRACT

The EU has been actively involved in peacekeeping operations and human rights promotion in Africa since the 2000s, when it emerged as a key partner of the AU and the UN. Similarly, by participating in humanitarian and conflict management operations, the US increased its focus on the continent in the first decade of the 21st century. Both the EU and the US have been staunch supporters of the principle of the Responsibility to Protect R2P in SSA. What distinguishes European initiatives in the field of conflict management and humanitarian intervention in SSA, however, is a focus on the principles of regional integration,1 African ownership, structural stability, and international law.
