ABSTRACT
Sustainable development has been in the agenda of the EU’s Africa policy since the late 1990s, when the EU began to play an active role in UN environmental negotiations. As in the cases of peacekeeping and trade, the distinct features of the EU’s Africa policy in the field of environmental protection emerge most clearly from comparisons with the US, another relevant actor in global negotiations in this area.
