ABSTRACT
In former times we derived the meaning for our existence from God. Religion provided a framework for human behaviour, defined our place in the overall scheme of things, and provided individual and collective aspirations. God’s power and our relationship to it was expressed symbolically through the scriptures and the rituals of the Church.
