ABSTRACT
The origin of the word ‘profession’ is based on a ‘declaration or vow of religious faith entry into religious order, or vocation or calling especially of learned or scientific or artistic kind’.3 As you progress through this book or indeed many publications in or about design you will indeed find that design is a religion and most of those who practise it are devoted to it. They are professionals in the true sense of the word. However, like any profession there are sub-divisions or specialisms. This chapter will discuss the design profession, its origins and the specialisms which arise from it, and goes on to consider the future of this profession.
