ABSTRACT

A bright and dynamic young opportunist, Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-74) proved himself exceptionally able in the art of politics. Following in the footsteps of his illustrious ancestors, Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent, he rapidly became adept at diplomacy and skillfully manipulated both friends and foes. He also proved he could outmanoeuvre the leaders of rival neighbouring states, as well as his enemies at home. When it came to politics, Cosimo could be a ruthless and implacable enemy. Many had cause to regret their opposition to his regime once they had fallen into his hands.1
