ABSTRACT

There is widespread use of the word ‘driver’ in the lexicon of employee research and measurement. I don’t particularly like the jargon, but rather than fight it let’s explain it.

A ‘driver’ is a source of influence on employees which results in them thinking, feeling and behaving differently. Thus the thinking goes that if you can pin down the influences or drivers which result in changes to understanding and behaviour it will be possible to manage the sources of influence and bring about broad-scale changes to the way people think, feel and behave. Whether this is an ethical or productive endeavour is controversial.
