ABSTRACT
The world was turned upside down by the many technological and political innovations of the first half of the twentieth century. Developments in India were part of the overwhelming changes affecting the world and the country was a recipient of those impacts. The forces of change that existed in the country under British rule increased after Independence. It was the urban middle-class that was most affected by them.
