ABSTRACT

Mindful of his leadership and under his command, is there anything beyond our daring, beyond our expectations? Is there anything in the world more noble? Is anything preferable when all is said and done? I have addressed myself to this theme in verses from my second eclogue. What I wrote is insufficient, and I suppose an my readers will agree. But here they are since it may be worthwhile to quote them at this point:

What great glory awaits you in times to come, 0 Daphnis!2 Yourself the embodiment of glory! From the high vault of heaven legions of angels Together with an army of stars fight on your behalf. While you bring on the great lion ofyour native land - Outstanding in his time-tested courage3 - To lord it over peoples hitherto unmastered, And to compel an other living things to acknowledge his sole and sovereign

rule With no holding back. You compel them to line up Behind the victorious standards and the laurel crowns of triumph. See how the lion rears up roaring, How he darts his fiery eyes till an acknowledge hirn, Confessing his sole supremacy. Tremble, 0 ye people! And know that no land will ever provoke his anger And escape unpunished. Let Narcissus himself Yield to hirn, Narcissus who drowned in self-Iove, And an the flowers of the field, the wild things,
