ABSTRACT

Even though the 13th Congress had resoundingly endorsed the concentration on trade union work and building the united front, many Party activists remained hostile to these and resisted the abandonment of Independent Leadership. The Labour Monthly Recall Conference provided the occasion for a conspicuous display of unity amongst all militants about the need to concentrate on a united front for fighting fascism. The Hunger March Solidarity Committees’ purpose was to provide accommodation, succour, publicity and moral support for the hunger marchers. They embodied the united front in action. The Labour Monthly Conference was recalled on 21st September for the ostensible reason of hearing a report back from Trades Union Congress delegates. In Oxford, the Hunger March Solidarity Committee had turned its attention to the large, new Pressed Steel body plant in Cowley. The Amalgamated Engineering Union London District Committee held a conference to promote the campaign in October 1934.
