ABSTRACT
It is unfortunately true that people working in the public sector are often at risk of aggression from their clients. By the sheer nature of their work, social workers and probation officers deal with society's most dangerous and mentally ill people, often in difficult and unsafe situations such as home visits. In the past few years:
• Isobel Schwarz, a hospital social worker, was killed in her office in 1984 by a client known to have a history of violence.
