ABSTRACT
The exploration in the seventeenth and subsequent centuries of forms and styles within an alternative and Protestant Christian aesthetic was preceded by a period of systematic destruction. The dismantling of the monasteries at the time of the dissolution in the 1530s reduced some of the greater buildings of the medieval period to piles of rubble. Others were left roofless but nonetheless mysterious and inspiring for poets such as Wordsworth.
