ABSTRACT

The Aegean Sea constitutes the north east part of the Mediterranean Sea which stretches between the mainland territories of Greece and Turkey. Upon the collapse of the Empire in the early 1900s, the Aegean Sea became the subject of many conflicting claims. The disputes concern various matters some of which are related to the Aegean islands. One of the disputes in this context is the determination in clear terms of sovereignty over certain Aegean islands. Another dispute concerns the demilitarised status of the eastern Aegean islands which is provided for by certain international agreements. The other disputed matters relate to the Aegean Sea as a whole. In reviewing the Aegean maritime disputes on the basis of the relevant law, it is not still possible to ignore all the relevant political considerations which cannot be separated totally from the application of the delimitation law.
