The C alifo rn ia S ilk C enter A ssociation of Los A ngeles was form ed early in 1869 u n d er the d irection and enthusiasm of L ouis P révost, who had been tra in ed in the a rts of se ricu ltu re in F ran ce . In Ju n e o r Ju ly of the sam e y ea r th is o rgan ization secured p ro p ertie s in R iverside C ounty com prising th e E ubidoux R aneho the H a rtsh o rn T rac t, and the Ju ru p a , consisting in a ll of 8,629 acres in th e area now p a rtly occupied by the c ity of E iverside. U nfo rtu n a te ly , befo re developm ents w ere u n d ertak en , P rév o st died on A ugust 16, 1869 and th e p ro jec t received a v e ry serions setback. In th e sum m er of 1870, J . W . N orth , of K noxville, Tennessee, organized the S ou thern C alifo rn ia Colony A ssociation w hich took over th e whole tra c t o f lan d and la id ou t a tow n whicL·. was firs t nam ed J n ru p a and la te r E iverside. O ther associations w ere also organized d u rin g the succeeding y ears in various p a rts of the sta te , b u t none of them ac tu a lly succeeded over any considerable len g th of tim e.
