ABSTRACT
Each of the technological and historical periods we considered was marked by quite different technological, economic, social, political and constitutional features. In some cases, such as that of ancient Egypt, the Reformation, and during the Industrial Revolution, it may be comparatively easy to see how technological change affected society, and therefore the constitution. Even in the course of the Roman empire – which was not, of course, homogeneous – and during the Middle Ages, there were signs that this was also occurring. That technology changes society, and society changes the constitution, may be a commonplace. But we can see signs that technology has directly affected the constitution, while also having social or economic effects.
