ABSTRACT

Knowing how to give feedback to students in ways which they will 'hear' is vital in order to develop their practice skills. Similarly, it is important for teachers to seek feedback from the student about their practice teaching skills, to help teachers develop them. The art of giving and receiving feedback is not well developed in the UK. Positive feedback is too often viewed suspiciously as 'not genuine' and taken for flattery or deference. Giving feedback and receiving feedback are essential skills for a practice teacher, and the good news is that they can be learned and improved upon. This activity develops skills in explicit, deliberate, verbal feedback. Receiving bruising feedback is unpleasant, and it colours teachers' next contacts with the student. Acknowledging the bruise at some later date and reflecting back on what was said is an important step towards re-opening communication channels.
