ABSTRACT

Aviation is just one of the many areas of society that is coming to the realization that global communication needs to be standardized. Even though English is the primary aviation language, as it is for business, there is not an agreed upon standard for being able to read, speak and understand English. Variations in English (accents and dialects) can interfere with the process of communication by creating misunderstandings, ambiguity and slowing the process of comprehension. Although the Federal A viation Regulations require that pi lots be able to read, speak and understand English when flying in the U.S. airspace, the regulations do not address the very important issue of a performance standard that needs to be met.
