ABSTRACT

Sydney's Archbishop Peter Jensen is the best known Anglican leader in Australia, and the best known Australian churchman internationally. Many assume he is the Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia. He is not, but that has not stopped him operating as a frequent national spokesman, and assuming the mantle of an international Anglican leader. Jensen became Archbishop at an opportune time for an international role, given the tempest about to hit the worldwide Anglican Communion as The Episcopal [Anglican] Church (TEC) in the United States consecrated a bishop in an ongoing gay relationship. By 2010, an alternative Communion was already in place, ready to welcome dissenters such as Jensen's 'middle group'. It grew out of the global south alliance that had its origins in the early 1990s, before the Anglican Communion turmoil began. Sydney Diocese has taken a more conservative position in relation to divorce than other Australian dioceses.
