This essay consists of a series of considerably compressed argument-sketches that will be expanded as chapters in a larger book-length study tentatively titled Environmental Ethics and Political Theory, one part of which deals with our obligations to future generations. An earlier version was very helpfully criticised by David Miller, Mathew Humphrey, Marc Stears, and other members of the Political Theory Workshop at N uffield College, Oxford.
