ABSTRACT
The Oxford English Dictionary defines a desert as an area which is 'uninhabited, desolate and abandoned'. It is defined geographically as an area that has very little moisture in the atmosphere. Although most people think of desert as sand dunes, the truth is that only very small parts of the earth's deserts are covered in sand. In the majority of areas the sand has blown away leaving a gravel surface.
