ABSTRACT
This study has had two main objectives: first, to fill some gaps in the sociological understanding of a significant subculture; and second, to provide useful ethnographic data and analysis that can inform current theoretical debates in the area of contemporary social and cultural change, particularly in relation to the self, identity and community in a postmodernizing world.
