ABSTRACT

The River Avon flows through Bristol to meet the Severn estuary 9 miles away at Avonmouth. About 1 mile downstream from the Bristol docks, the river enters a gorge with cliffs rising precipitously to some 300ft on the Gloucestershire side at Clifton, but with slopes ascending less steeply through Leigh Woods from the Somerset bank. The river itself is tidal in these reaches and is about 300 ft wide from bank to bank
