ABSTRACT

The 'graduated sarcophagus' type consists of two 'stories': the lower one is about 30 to 40 centimetres high and the upper one about 10 centimetres. The upper 'story' forms a narrow ledge, upon which rests a half-cylinder, as a kind of 'roof. The average length of the tombs is about 180 centimetres (tombs of children are, of course, smaller). All three elements of the structure are built of local undressed chalk-stone held together with loam. After the structure was erected, it was coated with plaster and probably whitewashed.
