ABSTRACT
Westtown School, founded in 1799 and still in operation, accepted both boys and girls from the earliest days. Because the school has been in continuous operation for over 200 years, has maintained archives and has had three books documenting its history,2 it is easier to make the connections between education and needlework than for most other schools. Watson dewees chronicled the first 100 years in 1899 in A Century of Westtown History, and Helen Hole wrote Westtown through the Ages in 1942, which also provided a history of day-to-day activities and included a list of teachers for over a 100 year period. A companion volume published in 1945 is a catalog of students and officers of the school up to that time.
