Promise: a reasonable ground for hope and expectation, especially of future excellence and satisfaction.

The Promise of Biotechnology

Using new biological tools, researchers have developed a wide range of possibilities for using living organisms, or parts of living organisms, to produce new products or processes. Biotechnology has applications in many sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, environmental protection, and aquaculture. In healthcare, for example, research based on biotechnology has resulted in new diagnostic tools and treatments for cancer, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, asthma and AIDS. In agriculture, the industry has created disease resistant plants that are helping developing economies respond to the food needs of their growing populations.2
