ABSTRACT

ATCO selection and training are highly interrelated, and should be considered as a continuum, from recruitment through to training and on-the job performance. Selection should identify and select those candidates who are predicted to become successful controllers. Given that applicants are selected correctly on those characteristics which are critical to becoming a successful controller, training should support the controllers in acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful controller. The European Commission DGVII project CAST considered both selection and training of air traffic controllers for future ATM systems. The main objective of CAST was to identify the implications of future ATM systems for ATCO selection and training, and to provide guidelines for future controller selection and training. This chapter addresses the main results of CAST, especially with respect to ATCO training for future ATM systems.
