ABSTRACT
TheGovernmentofMaharashtra'sslumredevelopmentstrategyinMumbai involveddemolishingtheexistingslumsandbuildingnew,entirelycrosssubsidized,medium-rise,apartment-blockhousingfortheslum-dwellerson theoriginalsites.Thestrategyisdistinctlydifferentfromthetwoprevalent conventionalstrategieswithrespecttoslumsindevelopingcountriesslumclearanceandslumupgrading.Interestingly,myevidencesuggests thatslumredevelopmentinMumbaienjoyedconsiderablesupportofslumdwellers,NGOs,privatedevelopersandland-owners.However,veryfew redevelopmentprojectshadbeencompletedinthecity.
